The Why
It’s always daunting to start something… you constantly overthink the rationale, the implication, and all the other mental baggage that comes with it.
For me, it is starting to write. It’s been in my head for the past couple of years, but I have never really gotten into it. There are always voices in my head that spurt out illogical reasons as to why I should not do it; “Owh… it’s gonna take too much time, nobody is going to read it, are you even capable of writing, just chill…”
While those voices still linger, I have decided to give it a go this year. This platform will serve as a place for me to share my thoughts, particularly on business. The goal is to hopefully be a place where individuals can be enlightened by some of the workings across various industries, how businesses drive value, what the key value chains in each industry are, what trends may impact them going forward, or answering random business questions such as "Why Netflix is cancelling popular shows?” (honestly though, why do they keep cancelling seemingly popular shows…).
While the goal is to enlighten people, in the event that this Substack does not reach a lot of people, it would still greatly benefit me as a form of mental exercise.
The What
I hope to be able to produce a post on a monthly/bi-monthly basis with a target reading time of anything between 5 minutes to 30 minutes. As for now, I have yet to set the type of content I will be producing (i.e. deep dives, weekly thoughts, or a combination of multiple formats). Hence, over the first few posts, I will likely be rambling about things that pop in my head, before settling in to something more structured. Few things at the top of my head in terms of content format would be:
Business questions and my attempt to answering them in a data-driven / structured manner (e.g. Why achieving scale may not necessarily lead to better economics in X industry?)
Deep dives into industries / companies (e.g. how X industry works or the Economics of Company A)
My thoughts on business news (e.g. Impact of introduction of Product X to Y Co)
As I post, I would love to get your feedback on the posts themselves, what improvements should I incorporate and what elements should I stop doing. I also realize that my understanding of some the elements of what I write may be premature or even completely erroneous. In those specific instances, do call me out on it.
That is all for now from me. I hope that creating this Substack can add value to you readers and ensure that I remain disciplined in my pursuit to start writing. Thank you for the time!
Have a great day and Happy New Year!
